{ trouble }
Hugo gripped his watch tightly in his hand as he walked stiffly and quickly through the train station. He tried to look unsuspicious but couldn’t help but glance around every now and then.
He quickened his pace as he walked past the station inspector. He just wanted to get out of the open and back in the walls as soon as possible. He felt so…exposed.
The inspector’s dog growled at him and by now Hugo was almost running. So much for being subtle, but if he could just get out of the way fast enough-
He ran right into someone and gave a small yelp when he fell. He looked over his shoulder at the station inspector as he frantically started to snatch up the papers that had fallen before whoever he’d bumped into could get the chance to drag him to the inspector.
The papers flew all around him, and a small pang of guilt shot through his mind. Why Jason had no idea, since the kid did run into him after all, but the look on his face, the one that could rival a trapped animal’s, made him feel a little bad. Something must have happened, and he must have gotten in the way. His step-mother always said that the streets in Europe were full of people running from something, usually the police she pointed out, but he didn’t expect to run into those running people. “Here let me help,” he offered, squatting down to pick up some of the papers.
